To efficiently sort the seeds from the duff, many seed collectors will place the duff in a tall container and light the duff on fire. It then flash burns quickly, leaving the seeds unharmed at the bottom of the barrel. This design features a narrow channel down the front to light the duff low, so that it all burns efficiently. The porcelain milkweed pods hold matches, which can be stricken on the rough, marbled basin, cradling the crucible form.

This piece was created as part of the "Listening to Water" Symposium, organized by the Talking Wings Collective, and exhibited at the Richard F. Brush Gallery at St. Lawrence University.
Artist statement:
“If I held still long enough, could I read your waves like words?
Your ripples as whispers, if I am quiet enough?
Do the stones reach for your caress?
Do they wait for you to relax their sharpness,
like I do,
standing on the river’s edge?
Meditating on particle interaction, between the metamorphic rock created 1.2 billion years ago by the collision of tectonic plates, and the bubbling waters welling from between the cracks, this work records memories of relation.
The waters of the West Branch of the St. Regis have held me, slowed me, and shown me, in intermittent glimpses, the wild world where cold headwaters transition to the warmer water of the lowland watershed of the Kaniatarowanenneh/St. Lawrence River.
What the water holds below its’ surface is a fingerprint of this place we call home. Minerals from the rocks transition from stone, to plant, to animal and fungi through the unique qualities of erosion. Clay, too, relies on water’s energy in the signature formations of its’ platelets: revealing quartz, clay minerals and dissolved ions in erosion’s wake. All of this is happening beneath that mesmerizing veil of ripples on the surface, the undulations dancing around boulders strewn in its’ path. And welling up from submerged, fallen plant matter and the flick of a Fall Fish’s tail. Entropy becomes necessary for reformation. The caress of a billion particles over an unfathomable time span coalesce in the flow, curling around my outstretched fingers. Tiny wakes ripple downstream and disappear in the seams.“

For a few summers as a kid, I got to visit family that lived on the coast of Maine, where my father grew up, in the house my grandfather built on Casco Bay. My sister, and cousins and I use to get old tomato bags from my aunt, just like my dad did from my grandmother, and stuff them with cracked open mussels that we would harvest from the crusty rocks littering the shoreline. We would then throw them over the edge and watch as crabs scurried to feast on the mussels below, pulling them up slowly so they wouldn't fall. After sun began to set, we would tip our buckets over and watch as the crabs plopped back into the sea, as the tide returned from the open ocean. The found objects used are actually Diodora Dysoni limpets that I found on the Oregon Coast, but their resemblance to the mollusks we harvested, and the barnacles that use to cut our feet was uncanny to me. The rocky shorelines that I saw in Oregon resembled Casco Bay, while still remaining distinctly different.
